Purpose of JBIC
Watch |
|
JBIC Watch (English) provides essential information that the
Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC) has failed
to provide to people affected by the projects it finances.
Much of the information that JBIC provides about projects
that it is considering financing is only in Japanese. JBIC-Watch
(English) provides such information in English so that project-affected
people and concerned groups may access and use the information.

process of JBIC projects. It also explains the important parts
of JBIC's environmental guidelines and how to use JBICfs complaints
procedure, called the gObjection Procedures.h If you or people
you know are suffering because of a development project financed
by JBIC, this handbook may be a useful tool for you. (more)

Japanese Version |
|
As part of Prime Minister Koizumifs government reforms, there
has been much debate in recent months over the future of the
Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC). It remains
to be seen what agency will take over operations currently
under JBIC, which implements official development assistance
(ODA) loans and supports overseas investment by Japanese corporations.
Regardless of how JBIC is reorganized, however, it is doubtful
whether the social and environmental problems caused overseas
by JBIC will be resolved.
Three Japanese NGOs (FoE Japan, Japan Center for a Sustainable
Environment and Society, and Mekong Watch) have established
gJBIC Watch (Japanese).h The purpose of JBIC Watch (Japanese)
is to convey the voices of project-affected people and to
conduct advocacy regarding the governmentfs plans to reorganize
the functions of JBIC from the point of view of local people
in developing countries. (go to http://jbic-watch.net/jp/)
JBIC Watch (Japanese) contains information about problem
projects financed by JBIC, interviews of local people affected
by JBIC projects, and short essays by JBIC monitors.
