JBIC's Project Categorization

JBIC puts projects into one of four categories, A, B, C, or FI, in accordance with the extent of the environmental impact(s) and/or JBIC's involvement in the project. Category A and B projects are expected to have significant impacts on the environment (for more detailed explanations, see JBIC page

Below is a list of all the projects that JBIC has classified as Category A or B since JBIC's new guidelines were established on October 1, 2002. (The full implementation of the guidelines started on October 1, 2003.)  This list is a translation of the list provided in Japanese on JBIC's official website.

Category B Projects
Communication backborn network development project in Mekon Region

Present Status of Project JBIC's environmental review is ongoing.
Project Outline and Sector To construct optical cable and related facility and equipment in six Provinces, mid-Cambodia.
Reasons for Category Classification (Based on “Illustrative list of Sensitive Sectors, Characteristics and Areas” of Guidelines) This project does not fall under the sensitive sectors, characteristics and regions and thus does not have significant adverse impact on the environment.

Project Outline and Sector  
Reasons for Category Classification (Based on “Illustrative list of Sensitive Sectors, Characteristics and Areas” of Guidelines) The project concerned is not considered a large-scale port sector project described in the environmental guidelines. The undesirable impacts of the project to the environment is judged to be insignificant, and the project site is not considered vulenrable to impacts or to have charactoristics that would cause impacts.
